Finding salamanders

We visited my parents the other day and Jonathan, our four year old, decided he wanted to walked down to the pond, despite how muddy it was.

Most exciting for him was when I spotted what I thought were tadpoles, but turned out to be red-belly newts. He loved having grandpa pick them up and hand them to him.

He giggled and handed them to me to try holding for a bit too.

Then he tossed them back into the shallow area by the pond – yes, tossed them. I guess he thought they were made of tough stuff and they seemed to be because they went back to swimming along and hiding in the mud even after he would toss them. Honestly, we didn’t realize he was going to toss the first one and after wards asked him to nicely put them in the water!

A tip – we found out these are red-belly newts and a marine biologist told us next time our hands need to be wet if we handle them because the oils on our hands can hurt them.

A reunion.

My dad was away for about a week on a trip to the south with my mom and aunt and before that sickness kept us from seeing my parents.

When we were finally able to see them, Jonathan gravitated to his grandparents and great aunt. He told grandma about his farts, which she greatly appreciated I am sure, and his great aunt about his transformers. He told grandpa about his karate and pain inducing skills when he karate chopped Grandpa a few times and then took his pinky and twisted until Grandpa yelped in pain and then laughed in amazement at how strong his four-year old grandson is.

And then Jonathan laid on his grandpa’s head while Grandpa watched the end of the NASCAR race – as if that was where he should be – resting atop a man’s head.
